Humility and Self Awareness

If we are to walk in humility, there is a need for self-awareness. Humility involves regarding oneself rightly in light of and in relation to-God. The psalmist models this path of self-awareness leading to humility in the cry, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way." (Psalm I39:23-24NAS) It is as we attend well to what the Spirit reveals from this searching that we may deepen in humility and live well with one another. When we embrace the searching of the Spirit within the context of the community of believers who "speak the truth in love"  (Ephesians4 :15,25), we are on the path of living well.

We are wise to ask some honest and safe people who know us to tell something of what it is to be in relationship with us. It is the only way we have of knowing what it is to be on the outside of ourselves! I have come to see this feedback given by another as one of the finest ways we have of loving one another well. So, invite the searching of the Spirit of truth and a trusted, honest other, that you may walk in humilitv. living and loving well. - Jill Fleagle

So true! Having done this once in a group setting, I can say it was one of the most revealing, humbling, and character-building experiences I have ever had. Difficult, yes. I did not necessarily want to hear all of the things that were said, but the mojority of them were also enlightening in the sense that I did not realize the positives about knowing me, either. Looking at ourselves objectively is hard - impossible, maybe - without asking others (and God's Word) to be our mirror.
